I am a dentist in Georgia. What you should know is that Georgia has a two-tiered system for dental offices. The lower tier is a single, individual practice owned by a dentist who cares about their patients and know his or her work. This is similar to The Loop’s definition of dental care. The upper tier is conglomerates that run multiple offices in multiple cities. These are the people that advertise and generate mass advertising, the lower dollar physicians, chemists, and such. The upper tier is usually run by other dentists, who are looking for a lump sum of money and run their offices as mass marketing machines.
In Georgia, dentists are charged with $300 a tooth for cleanings and $300 for fillings. The first $400 per year you bill the insurance companies, the second $400 per year you are a “volunteer.” If you have a large practice (20-100), you are forced to charge double rates, or take a lower rate.
My practice is based on the services I perform, not the people who pay for those services. I do not advertise. I do not sell insurance. I do not try to “cobble” patients. I treat patients the way I would treat my own family. I try to take care of them, because that is the patient’s privilege. I do not try to sell them anything, because I am not a salesman. I do not advertise because if I have a good patient, he or she will send people to me. I have a system, but it is all about the patient, not the patient’s cash.
It is a free market system. I have to charge for my services. I have to do it in a way that the insurance companies and the government will pay for. That is not the way the upper tier does it.
